Water heater rewards programs

The TECH Clean California program requires customers who live in Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) and Southern California Edison (SCE) territories to enroll in a water heating rewards program in addition to a Demand Response program and time-of-use (TOU) rate plan. By enrolling in a water heating rewards program, you’ll take advantage of lower electricity prices by making slight shifts to your energy use to times of day when electricity is less expensive. You’ll not only save money, you’ll also earn rewards.

How does a Water Heating Rewards program work?

Water heating rewards programs like SmartShift Rewards (for customers of SCE) and WatterSaver (for customers of PG&E) connect to your heat pump water heater to heat your water during times of day when electricity prices are lower and power from renewable energy sources is abundant. You’ll have hot water whenever you need it, without paying the highest prices for electricity. When you enroll in SmartShift Rewards or WatterSaver you’ll get a $50 enrollment bonus, plus earn $5 for every month you participate.

Plus, by participating in a Rewards program you’re helping to keep California’s energy supply cleaner and more reliable. Making small shifts to when electricity is used helps even out the demand on the electric grid which can help avoid power outages and take advantage of electricity generated from renewable sources like solar and wind, which are abundant during the day.
