Great news for Californians! The Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates (HEEHRA) Program has officially launched, offering a total of $80 million in rebates to help households upgrade to clean, efficient electric appliances. Through the state’s TECH Clean California initiative, $45 million is now available to income-eligible, single family households to make switching to zero-emission heat pump HVAC systems easier and more affordable. Another $35 million in rebates is available for multifamily property owners and operators to upgrade units to efficient electric equipment such as heat pump HVAC, heat pump water heaters, stoves, dryers, electric panel upgrades, and other equipment.
HEEHRA is one of the first programs to roll out under the federal Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which is managed by the U.S. Department of Energy and overseen by the California Energy Commission. The goal of this initiative is to improve energy efficiency, facilitate the switch from fossil fuels to efficient electric equipment, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and support California’s climate goals of achieving 3 million climate-ready homes and 6 million heat pumps by 2030.
Who Qualifies for HEEHRA Rebates?
HEEHRA rebates are available to income-eligible, single family and multifamily households through certified TECH Clean California contractors.
The single family rebate program provides eligible households a rebate for a new ENERGY STAR ® certified heat pump HVAC.
Income eligibility is as follows:
For multifamily property owners, the savings can be even greater! Up to $14,000 in rebates per unit are available for upgrades to new ENERGY STAR® certified heat pump HVAC systems, water heaters, heat pump clothes dryer, and electric stoves, cooktops, ranges, or ovens.
HEEHRA rebates available through TECH Clean California may be combined/stacked with other incentives, maximizing savings for homeowners.
Why Switch to Heat Pumps and Other Electric Technology?
Heat pumps for home heating and cooling, water heating, or drying clothes offer a range of benefits from reduced energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions to cleaner air. Since heat pumps operate on electricity and produce zero emissions, they help reduce indoor air pollution while they cool and heat your home, heat your water, or dry your clothes. This is especially critical for Californians facing more frequent heat waves and severe air pollution.
By switching to efficient electric technologies, homeowners can not only enjoy cleaner, more comfortable living spaces but also contribute to California’s environmental goals.
